Screenlets. Awesome open source app that uses no CPU or RAM. You will, however, need Compiz in order to make them look pretty. But they can look very pretty: http://www.screenlets.org/index.php/Screenshots

Agreed, being picky about what you have on your desktop is a good thing. The only bad thing is that being picky and running widescreen has it's drawbacks. Sure, there's some wallpapers you can shoop and expand/zoom but others will just detract from it's glory. It's kind of a good thing when you consider the plain, simple walls that I've been using recently.. as pictured...

...however for wallpaper like this one, I can't bring myself to even try to edit this one to widescreen. It's probably one of my favorite Higurashi walls.
