ATI Radeon 5770. Anyone have one? How does it fair against the 5800 series? Should I spend the extra money for the 58XX? I'm buying one for heavy gaming, but kinda budgeted. If there isnt much impact, I'll stick to teh 5770.

so I bought a 30 gb SDD drive some time ago to try this fancy pancy stuff out which I used to install vista ultimate x64 on.
big mistake, as I constanty have to manage the only 1 gb remainging free space. (fucking everything wants to be put on your c drive god dammit)

now I downloaded windows 7. will it fit on 30 gbs with at least a little free space to play around in? maybe gasp have my virtual memory on the same drive?

>> No.1974   [Delete]   [Edit]

That should be enough space.

>> No.1975   [Delete]   [Edit]

Well, if you don't feel like putting much on it, then fine. You won't even be able to fit that many games on it. I suggest you go get an Intel X-25M or a Crucial RealSSD 300 instead. The former is 160 GB, the latter is 250 GB. Both have very good performance, the latter is faster overall but the former is better in different in some areas and is cheaper too. You might as well sell/ditch the old one and upgrade. Windows 7 should handle the SSD better than Vista too.

Here's a link to a recent SSD roundup: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/windows-7-ssd-trim,2705.html

Undervolted to .9625 volts, my i7-930 is about 30* degrees cooler than stock (mid 60 degrees, as opposed to mid 90). I definitely recommend it. Also, if you can get a hold of a .edu email address, you can get Windows 7 Pro for $30 (technically it's the upgrade version, but there's ways to install it over a clean hard drive)

>> No.1969   [Delete]   [Edit]

I didn't say not to run windows, I said I'd run ubuntu before I "paid" MS for their epic fail... wink wink, nudge nudge.

>Ubuntu's directories seen difficult to navigate/change

And windows 7 is better? The "My Documents" folder was the only premade user folder windows should have ever created. (and one other for keeping personal program settings/preferences) People that can't make their own folders & subfolders and organize them aren't able to find their shit regardless of Microsofts efforts...

It looks on the expensive side, but that depends on what you plan to do with it, AND how long you want this box to last before you have to break down and buy a new one.

Video:
This card will take up 2 slots. Your x4 PCI slot will be unusable. Also, you might get by with the GV-N460OC-768I. It's the same card with a little less memory and is about $100 cheaper.
This card is ALREADY overclocked. That's why it has those fans. I wouldn't try overclocking it any more. You'll probably have to put the video card in slot 1 to avoid the heatsink on your mainboard's southbridge.

HDDs:
I have no experience with Samsumg drives, either. I tend to stick with WD or Seagate. I'm currently using a few Western Digital WD10EADS 1TB drives. They've run really well, and I'd recommend the drive. The AV drive doesn't look much different than the WD10EADS, but I'd stick with it if you're planning on stea...err, using alot of multimedia.

I looked into the raidmax smilodon further. IMO its a terrible case. It looks cramp and that bezel door is just going to be an annoyance.

The CM 590 has
4 rubber isolated harddrive mounts with fan.
PSU mounted in the bottom, gets it away from the CPU.
The drives can be mounted in any location from top to bottom.
The front bezel pops off with ease for cleaning or relocating/pulling/installing drives.
Just all around better...
The only case that comes close is a thermaltake armor series but they're heavier and cost a lot more.

Can /tech/ suggest a decent mic?
I just got VoIP and Skype connected to a makeshift voice changer, but my laptop mic blows and so have the ones I've bought. I need a desktop mic with some range so that I don't need the thing shoved down my throat to pick up sound. I already have headphones coming out of my ass so I'm avoiding headsets, and 3.5mm jack would be best since it's a laptop and has limited USB ports.

good evening /tech/nowizards, i need a new computer. nothing high-end, just decent enough to play games like dragon age, mass effect 2 etc on stable 60 frames. my budget is limited to 200-250€. maybe i can bring up a some more next month or so.

WHAT I NEED: Mainboard - RAM - CPU
don't worry about videocard. maybe a case and PSU would be neat soon, though my current ones are still doing their jobs.

assumingly good offers i've found yet:
mainboard

CPU

also found some offers on Corsair 2GB DDR3 for about 45€

That first board sounds great and I support that triple core CPU you're getting. Corsair RAM is decent since they're good with cooling. G. Skill RAM is good too.

So i've been wondering, is FLAC really a superior compression format compared to MP3?

And even if it is, is it worth the time to transpose ones music collection from one format to FLAC?

What does /tech/ think on this?

>> No.1947   [Delete]   [Edit]

Unless you have REALLY high end audio equipment, and very sensitive hearing, you're almost never going to tell the difference between 320kbps mp3 and FLAC (even high-end headphones might not be enough to matter). Just stick with 320 kbps VBR MP3s for now.

>> No.1949   [Delete]   [Edit]

>>1946
>>1947

While you are 100% correct about how one should stick to MP3 for the most part as opposed to FLAC, it's not necessarily true that you need badass equipment to be able to tell the difference, though you do need something of an ear. I don't have any kind of badass or high end equipment and I can tell the difference, albeit it is very subtle. It's not something that is in-your-face and obvious and you do, as you've said, need an ear to be able to tell.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that one should have decent head/ear phones as well. Your 2 dollar ear buds from radio shack won't cut it (obviously) but you don't have to spend anything above like 30-40. You can buy some good phillips earbuds (what I use) for like 20-30 bucks depending on where you shop.

tl;dr - your ear, not your equipment is the deciding factor. Equipment just helps.

>> No.1950   [Delete]   [Edit]

>>1949

In particular, you would want an ear with the sensitivity to pass an ABX test ( http://wiki.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?title=ABX ) between FLAC and 320kbps MP3. The differences between the two can be more or less pronounced depending on factors such as a track's genre.

>> No.1952   [Delete]   [Edit]

I'm going to have to be a stick in the mud and say I honestly cannot tell the difference, I really can't. And people consider me a audiophile. Oh well.

>> No.1953   [Delete]   [Edit]

>>1952
Thank you. It's really not worth the bandwidth to download and disk space to store unless you deal with production or even sometimes DJing if you know what the fuck you're doing in the first place with again, proper equipment. Really good headphones will work as well though as >>1949 pointed out.

Thread closed. Everyone now knows everything about FLAC.

related to the image...
i was working at tech support, checking quality, and some old woman complained that her computer was dirty.
So someone suggested as a joke that she should clean it with alcohol, and she promptly thanked us and hung up.
This was tech support for a company, and she was probably worried about cost or something.
Anyways, her boss called our boss the next day telling us not to give such advice, even as a joke, because she went out and bought a bottle of vodka and washed the pc with it.
The computer worked, but the whole office smelt like vodka, so they had to dump the machine.

Well, i did read Wikipedia but also wanted to know from you guys what you know about it, for what you use it and if it's good/better whatever.

>> No.1931   [Delete]   [Edit]

tl;dr except unless you plan on doing certain mobile/embedded development or just general fucking around there aren't too many reasons to learn any embedded technologies or such architectures (ARM).

In short, there's no reason to install Linux on your PS2 except for the absolute novelty of it. I wouldn't even call it much of an educational experience.

>> No.1932   [Delete]   [Edit]

>>1931

Thanks for the info. ... not sure about development on embedded systems. I am planing 2 Linux projects (private) and it would be nice to see them running on embedded system but if I think about it, those projects aren't ment for embedded systems.

Running on two computers. One is an iBook G4 (model PowerBook6,5)with a PowerPC G4 1.1 processor on going at 1.07GHz with 768MB memory. And the battery sucks ass with a few missing keys.
My primary comp is a eMac (PowerMac 4,4), PowerPC G4 3.3 processor with circuit mods to get 1GHz and 768MB SDRAM memory.
