me and kriegs are planning on creating a manga, and submitting it to a publishing company.

so here we shall post design sketches and ideas for plot setting etc.

(to the left we have some designs for ears and antlers for the elves. i'm not sure if the antlers should be smaller or not.)

a design for the giants, i was thinking of grandpa dorf when i drew this, so he cam out fairly old and war torn.

should they be more of a wide muscular type of giant or he lanky tall looking ones? or maybe a mix of both for variety.

'Tis good, although terret run the gamut from old and worn to young and handsome, in a rugged fashion. They can be lean or muscular. And now, for expanded info!

TERRET
The terret are sometimes nicknamed "giants," and for good reason. They tower over their fellow species, averaging nine to ten feet in height; they are powerfully built with banded muscles, dark skin ranging from tan to black, and hair in bright, vivid colors. All terret sport facial hair, though women can generally only manage goatees, long sideburns, or a chinstrap. Some terret women shave clean, but this is an uncommon style more common where the terret mingle with humans and other species.

BIOLOGICAL QUIRKS: The dark skin of the terret absorbs sunlight; their melanin functions like a plant's chlorophyll, allowing them to supplement their diet with solar energy, though they need food for vitamins and some calories. In this fashion, they eat more than humans, but not near as much as one might expect.

RELATIONS: Terret and humans have worked alongside and with each other since the dawn of time, and that relationship continues into the modern day. Humans and terret frequently share settlements, culture, and bits of language, although each specie's culture has its own unique qualities.

STYLE: Terret dress very formally from a human perspective, no matter what the situation. Even "play clothes" seem a great deal more formal than among other species, although cut and designed to allow greater mobility--as well as being easy to partially remove in order to take in more sunlight, if one needs the energy.

COMBAT: Because Terret are so big and so strong, armor built to their scale and lifting capability is remarkably thick and strong, able to withstand modern projectiles quite well. Further, their strength allows melee weaponry to hit with the force of a speeding car. Briefly, this means that terret still march to battle in plate armor, armed with enormous melee weapons.

Because of the necessity of covering one's self in combat, terrets who do a lot of fighting have especially voracious appetites to compensate for their decreased exposure to sunlight. Terret who eat unusually heavily (without being overweight or else obviously slothful) may mark himself as a man or woman who does a lot of fighting.

ELVES, YO!
Elves are similar in appearance to humans, although the majority are breathtakingly beautiful. Most have blonde hair and blue eyes, although other colors have been witnessed, including blue, white, or green hair. Elves stand taller than humans, most at six feet in height. Their most distinguishing marks, aside from their height, are ears and antlers; their ears are long and thin, shaped like palm-tree leaves, and can move around like cats' ears, often betraying their emotions. Elves also grow small antlers in various styles; most have between two and four points, but single-points are most prized.

BIOLOGICAL QUIRKS: Demesne elves, unlike typical fantasy elves, have lifespans similar to humans, although they do not suffer the effects of old age until a few days before natural death, which hits them like a hammer. They purposefully sacrificed their languid, eternal lives upon seeing how fast and powerful the humans and terret grew within what seemed the blinking of an eye; in sight of their productivity, the elves severed themselves from their fairy brethren, abandoning a world of shadows and fancy for a world that was real.

RELATIONS: Elves are competitive, but friendly, and enjoy "keeping up with the Joneses" not as a cutthroat competition, but as part of the joy of civilized life. They serve as a medium between those who prefer magic and those who prefer the more-predictable route of science.

Style: Elven styles tend to be idiosyncratic, changing wildly even in comparison to other species' fashions. There is a certain tendency towards flapperish dress as of late, although there is an equally strong "counter-flapper" movement that dresses more conservatively, not out of resentment, but out of purposeful contrast.

COMBAT: Elves gleefully mix all sorts of combat; they are among the earliest adopters of combined-arms combat. Unfortunately, many still rely on archaic ranged weapons, and while there's much to say for the power of a good bow, non-magical bows just can't keep up with a good solid firearm in many situations.

Notably, there are many elven healers, most of whom are distinguished by the magically-implanted quinine bark growing from their skin. Traditionally, the greatest organization of elven healers grew out of a giant mosquito infestation afflicting a town some centuries ago, and they helped combat the spread of malaria by growing quinine from their own skins.

Now we're getting into less-common territory. Probably only gonna be a couple of these in the story.

BRIGHTWELL
Brightwell are mutated offshoots of humanity; some are indistinguishable from humans, while others are more distinct. A few have strange hair or skin colors, while some have muscle structure that varies wildly from a normal human build. A number have ears with small points. Nearly every witch is tattooed with the Sun Cross, the symbol of the specie--a + in a circle. Usually the tattoo is on the left hand, although nationalistic or proud witches bear the sign on their forehead.

BIOLOGICAL QUIRKS: Brightwell have numerous small differences compared to humans; their organs are literally mirrored, for instance, with the heart on the right side of the chest. Most Brightwell are left-handed, and the left hand is an important symbol.

RELATIONS: Brightwell are somewhat at odds with the rest of the world. Aside from a tendency toward incredible nationalism, their culture glorifies or romanticizes many things (fairies, dangerous and easily-corrupted magic, madness spirits, mutants) other cultures shun or despise. They are also gradually impugning on ancient terret land, driving an especially deep wedge between the two species.

STYLE: Brightwell purposefully cultivate the image of a traditional magician, scholar, or witch, usually with modernist Art Deco twists to the design.

COMBAT: Brightwell are, first and foremost, spell-slingers, and their powerful ranged capabilities and willingness to use curses gives them an edge up on many fighters. For melee purposes, Brightwell typically stock their ranks with mutants.

Now we're getting into obscure...

DIMENUS
Dimenus are child-sized automatons that resemble lifelike dolls of any specie. They are quite short, hense their title, with the highest being a little higher than 4' and some inches in height, and the smallest being as short as 2 feet. They resemble lifelike dolls with faces that emote as well as any human's. Some are more doll-like, others are more like humanoid machines. All have obvious points of articulation (e.g. dolljoints), and move with a stiff, yet calculated and graceful, gait.

BIOLOGICAL QUIRKS: Being living machines, dimenus do not need to eat very much--sugars to keep themselves aware, water to keep themselves lubricated, and the occasional healthy meal to help them grow or heal. They have to sleep exactly eight hours every day, but they can spread out their sleep in intervals throughout a day.

RELATIONS: Being as they are a created specie, made by a wise, if slightly senile, inventor two centuries ago, the dimenus have a very weird relationship with the rest of the world. Mostly they're seen as a curiosity, or as a bunch of lost children in need of aid (not too far off). Dimenus are often led by cherubim, who have taken on a rather parental role in dimenus "society" (weird and limited as it is), and so many cherubim who have no idea what else to do with their life become guardian angels for the dimenus.

STYLE: Most Dimenus have a certain childlike attitude, or at least sense of style, and so dress like children. Unless they want to appear more grown-up, of course.

COMBAT: Dimenus are very, very poorly equipped to fight in proper war. Most who fight do so via magic, or else via small, painful weapons that can be used in a highly mobile combat style.

>> No.129   [Delete]   [Edit]

CHERUB
A Cherub resembles an elegant human. They are either very pale or very dark in skin color with little variance between. Their hair is universally light, usually a light red, faint brown, or platinum blond. Their eyes are always blue. There are two types of Cherub, angelic and demonic. Angelic cherubim (or angelics) bear halos above or around their heads (in numerous possible positions) and a pair of dovelike wings, each wing the length of their arm. Demonic cherubim (or daemonics) have horns on their head--in various styles, most often like ram's horns--and four batlike wings each twice the length of an arm.

BIOLOGICAL QUIRKS: Cherubim are sterile, and are born from enormous floating citadels hovering across the face of the planet. They are "born" fully grown and ready to join society. In their past, you see, they were the mass-produced shock troops for a war between heaven and hell (or, at least, spirit armies claiming to represent heaven and hell).

RELATIONS: Angelics are accepted nearly everywhere as divine emissaries, living gifts from the spirits to defend the good and righteous people of the earth. Unfortunately, many angelics pursue this path out of a sense of obligation more than genuinely feeling it. Daemonics are given a wide berth until they prove themselves, though, like angelics, daemonics feel no particular drive toward evil, although many live free and freeloading lives.

STYLE: Lacking anything else to go on, most cherubim dress in the fashion of old art of angels and demons, or else in a fashion fitting the culture they are integrating into.

COMBAT: Like terret, cherubim are uniquely suited to fighting in melee combat, and frequently become "avenging angels" in light-to-medium armor, wielding either large single weapons (longswords, spears, or scythes, most often) or a smaller weapon paired with a shield or main-gauche. These are supplemented with war-spells to scour their foes at a distance.

>> No.130   [Delete]   [Edit]

Incidentally, in terms of population, the races go Human > Terret > Elves >>> Dimenus > Cherubim >>>>>>>>>>> These guys. There's only a few of these guys left--collect 'em while you can!

IFIRDNA
The ifirdna are similar in appearance to humans, save that they are much shorter--most are around four-and-a-half feet in height, the tallest being five feet. They are covered in thin fur which can be mistaken for unusually-colored skin at a distance; most of the remaining ifirdna have light brown or yellow fur. Ifirdna have a mane of darker hair that resembles human scalp hair; catlike ears poke from around their temples. Males and females alike have prominent hips, owing to a vestigial third pair of legs growing around their pelvises. Ifirdna are also born with a short, fairly useless tail; in an adult it's around five or six inches, although many have their tails tied off at a young age.

BIOLOGICAL QUIRKS: The genders are very, very skewed among the ifirdna, with four-to-five females for every male. The males carry the children, too. To top it off, they mature at the age most humans are just entering puberty and die at around 50.

RELATIONS: Very recently, the small continent that served as the ifirdna's home suffered an apocalyptic cataclysm--what seemed to be a star growing from the center of the mini-continent. Those who saw the star-blossom often went blind; the few who escaped its wrath died a few weeks later of a terrible wasting disease. The survivors are scattered and few. There aren't enough surviving males to sustain themselves. Their days are numbered. Understandably, despite being tribal primitives, they get a lot of slack cut for them.

STYLE: Few ifirdna, if left to their own devices, will dress in anything heavier than a cloak in the winter, and prefer to go nude or just a loincloth. Societal pressure usually makes them put something over their breasts. "Fancy" = like a tribal shaman.

COMBAT: Being of that sort, ifirdna waged war with spears, knives, shortswords, atlatls, and the spirits of the angry dead. Nowadays, they aren't really fighting each other over land, and so many are learning the combative ways of more technologically advanced societies. Don't expect to see too many climb into plate armor, though.

And now, a moment with the Fair Folk.

THE FAIR FOLK
Few monsters have taken root in rumor quite as thoroughly as the fairies. Legend says they were born from seeds fallen from the Qliphoth tree, the dark mirror of the Tree of Life. They plague mankind with ills and misfortunes, ranging from innocuous-but-annoying pranks to child theft or murder. They must be slain or driven out wherever they are found. So go the stories.

In truth, the fair folk are reflections of mankind and his brethren. They are creatures of dream come to life in the Mana Shadow, the source of all mana. The shadow is a dreamlike, ethereal place whose nature changes as easily as a daydream. The fairies live in this eternal waking dream; being creatures of pure magic, their lives are eternal, peaceful, and surreal. They are, in essence, children.

Children with enormous magical powers. Children prone to boredom. Children who have felt and experienced very little.

The physical world, to the fairies, seems a world full of strange toys that feel. They cry, laugh, scream, they can even be neutral without being bored. It is a remarkable novelty, and it fills the fair folk with joy. Especially when they scream and cry.

The fair folk can feel pain, but from their limited experience, they have nearly no idea what it is, other than it happens when you twist up a person real tight and see all the red pour out of them, or you make the grownup girl do something weird with the little boy she keeps safe, or when you make the suits of armor come to life and poke their weapons in the party guests. They know it makes very amazing things happen, though, and so force it upon people whenever they can.

It's fortunate fairies only occasionally leave the mana shadow, and that they are usually satisfied with little wrongs and the occasional strange gift. Aside from misfortune, fairies also bring truly excess amounts of mana. Most beings maintain a balance of mana in their bodies; while storing a little more can be useful for magic, too much causes mana to build up in a physical form in one's body, causing grievous injuries, and typically sterilizing or altering the seed of victims, that all their future children will be mutants.

Understandably, something must be done when a fairy (or two, or, horror of horrors, more...) decides to take an extended lark in the Realworld.

another random character design. can be used or left out depending on whatever. i just randomly got inspired to draw him.

I was thinking of some sort of war legend called mohrd the naked. he was known for going onto the battlefield wearing nothing but trousers on, and empty handed.

the reason he could do so was partially because he is one of the largest terret in history, and was exposed to too much mana from fighting/hunting the fair folk all his life, and the excess mana happened to physically manifest as an extra layer of extremely thick durable red skin. he has only been wounded four times since he gained his mutation, and killed each person who managed to wound him.

I like the shape of the magazine myself--I figure, the bullets are designed to work with that shape, and since we don't usually see them, we don't have to explain until we do some more ballistics research. Which is always, always Later.

The curvature of the magazine is based on the shape of the round, especially the rounds that fire supersonic ammunition, or high calibur rounds.
For example, the British .303 round in the picture. If you compress the rounds in a magazine (as magazines are comprised of a spring, a plate to stack the ammunition on, and housing to hold the ammunition in place; they work by spring compression to feed the rounds into the chamber) the bullets are going to start to develop a curve to their stack due to the shape of the round.
Now, this being said, you can only press so hard on the stacked bullets before they start to slip and form that curved path. Using a crescent shaped magazine built on the curvature the bullets develop when stacked, and you can house more rounds. Not only that, it's a bit more stylish.
Crescent shaped magazines are built around practically housing more rounds per magazine. Sure, you can use a regular vertical stack magazine, but you'll only be able to put so much ammunition in before the bullets start to slip and jam the magazine.

tl;dr : they stack more naturally and you can have more ammunition in a crescent magazine than a straight one.
Edit: Also, if your magazine is backwards, then the bullets must be constructed backwards - smaller rear chamber, larger round. And that just doesn't make sense, unless you're planning on building long, large subsonic rounds.
So basically with a backwards magazine, your character has the bullets pointed towards them vice the barrel, thus negating the point of even having a gun.

Also, just thinking about it, building rounds with larger rounds and thinner shell casings would cause some pretty severe ballistics problems, especially with accuracy and cartridge jamming. The direction that the shell is facing in reference to the bullet determines direction of explosive force when the round is fired. With any type of loading mechanism, especially magazine-fed, that I can think of, the firing end of the round could not be accurately determined and would cause major variations in bullet trajectory, not only that, wholly destroying the rifling of the barrel of the weapon, possibly causing blowout and harm to the user.
Reverse magazine = bad idea.

Actually it depends on the ammunition type - 5.56 and 7.62 NATO for instance have a parallel-sided cartridge and so will stack in a vertical column, whereas 7.62x39 Russian has an angled cartridge and will only stack in a curve. And 7.62x54 Russian has a cartridge that's both angled and with a wide rim at the back, so the rounds have to stack in an offset fashion as well.

A nice website for weapon information by the way is http://world.guns.ru

thanks, that was very informative. do you have any suggestions as to what type i should use? we're going for about WW1 equivalent military technology, possibly more advanced silencing though. since it would be focused on more strongly since the best chance humans would have to kill a fairy would be to kill it before it notices you, and is able to construct any form of magical barrier or something.

another thing i've been wondering, is how a revolver looks when being reloaded, i've seen pics where the top is flipped to face down and the revolver is then loaded and flipped up again and locked into firing position, and i've seen ones that the revolver is simply pulled out of the side of the gun, loaded, and flipped back in.

which one would be best for WW1 era technology, and does anybody have some pics of guns in the reloading process i could use as reference?

>> No.168   [Delete]   [Edit]

I think both have coexisted in the same time frame, so it really depends on what you want it to look like when they're reloading. personally, I think the top-loading revolver would be somewhat easier to draw, but it's been quite some time since I've done any work on projectile weapons, and usually their physics and working were naturally built upon different mechanics given the story I was working on.

http://world.guns.ru/handguns/hg105-e.htm - side -opening cylinder example
http://world.guns.ru/handguns/hg49-e.htm - Vertical break-open example
A vertical break-open design would cause problems for longer-barrelled weapons. (Note that for easy reloading, a handgun with a side-opening cylinder should have the cylinder fold out to the left and a carbine or rifle should have it fold out to the right.)
Revolvers by their nature will leak gases from the gap between cylinder and barrel, thus making them hard to silence.
There's one revolver design I know of (http://world.guns.ru/handguns/hg194-e.htm)- a Russian model with an integral silencer and special ammunition - where the cylinder swivels out horizontally at an angle. This is part of the design that ensures a tighter gap between the barrel and cylinder to hinder gases from escaping.

i finally have sai again! so heres a new sketch, to celebrate getting my art program back. no clue if you can use it or not k9, but doesn't hurt to throw it in.

I've been having dreams about this girl lately, she lost her arms and left eye, not sure how since its still pretty fuzzy. but the plant on her left arm is a type of parasite that senses the electric signals being given off by ghost pains, and uses them to form a basic replacement, limb, and in turn it feeds off the humans blood, electrical signals, vitamins etc.
it takes slightly more nourishment than a real arm so the symbiont has to more than normal, but not by much.
and they also gain the ability to manipulate the plant into things other than an arm, with enough practice that is.

>> No.359   [Delete]   [Edit]

Technically because implanting living things into one's body isn't cybernetics. A cyborg has artificial bits and bobs to enhance their capabilities or replace missing ones. A "bio-cyborg" would be part of a symbiotic or parasitic relation if it's a foreign body hangin' out in or on their bodies. However, we don't really have a snappy slang term for "member of a symbiotic relationship"; "symbiote" refers to the whatsit getting its bio-boostin' mack on. So, bio-borg seems a good stopgap until we think of something awesomer.

A genetically-magically-engineered man meant to be the ultimate disposable super-cypher. Their love is ... complicated.

I like this idea, if you can give me more details on her personality, and any other character idea's you have then I can start doing designs for them.

I need to push my self out of this slump. although it doesn't help that my tablet is half borked.
